Zion Hill Baptist Church, a historical establishment since 1868, has been a pillar of faith and community strength. Over the centuries, it has endured numerous challenges while fostering a strong congregation that continues to thrive through collective worship and activities.


Key Historical Milestones


  • 1868: Church organized on August 20 in a brush harbor; Rev. Perry Williams was first pastor; 26 members.
  • 1878: Purchased 3 acres of land from Solomon Puckett for $9.
  • 1896: First sanctuary building constructed.
  • 1897: Sunday School ministry started with 20 enrolled.
  • 1900: First pump organ purchased.
  • 1921: Women’s Missionary Union organized.
  • 1931: First piano purchased.
  • 1953: First full-time pastor, Rev. Leneal Fortner, elected.
  • 1968: Rotating board of deacons established.
  • 1970: Fellowship hall and Sunday School rooms added.
  • 1975: New fellowship hall built.
  • 1995: Additional land purchased (total property = 11.4 acres).
  • 2006–2007: New sanctuary and fellowship hall built; first service June 2007; dedicated July 2007.
  • 2024: Sanctuary and education building loan paid off.
  • 2004–2025: Danny Newbern served as longest-tenured pastor; retired August 31, 2025.
  • Current: Rev. Danny Jones serving as interim pastor.
